A recent planning application has come to light for a facility at nearby Hespin Woods from Cumbria Waste Management (part of a group which is ultimately owned by Cumbria County Council).
According to Appendix 2.Section 3.para.3.2 (Page 4) of the supporting documents to the application ‘It is anticipated that the produced RDF would supply the approved Energy Recovery Facility at the nearby Kingmoor Park Industrial Estate.’
The same appendix para 3.6 refers to ‘The proposed facilities are intended to process up to 100,000 tonnes of (commercial and industrial) waste material per year’.
Recyclable elements such as glass and metals will be removed from it by an associated plant on the same site before the RDF is baled up for sending to the Kingmoor Incinerator. The concern is that if we do not object to this application, which on the surface seems rather innocuous then we are in a real sense implicitly condoning the burning of waste, particularly at Kingmoor Park which is an entirely inappropriate location for such a facility. We also firmly believe that the burning of waste for energy production is not a means of moving higher up the waste hierarchy but the destruction of a valuable resource that could be put to better use.
It is important that as many people object to this proposal as possible and in order to help people to object a template letter of objection can be downloaded on the link below which you might care to use. Objections to the planning application need to be received by Cumbria County Council Planning Department by 20th July.
